Where in the world are you?

Ya know, basically I'm a nosy person. I'm easily intrigued, my curiosity gets piqued and I just have to know. I'm not one of those people who are obsessed with wrapped packages, though, so don't get me wrong... that would be my sister. But, I'm just mildly interested in learning where you're from? You see that little ClustrMap to your right, there? Yeah, that's it. Did you ever click on it just to see what happens? Where it goes? There are a lot of dots on it, from all over the world, it looks like (though my geography sucks, probably only 1/4 of all the countries in the world are represented).

But, I'm curious, and I want to know you better. So, don't be shy, leave me a comment and just say where you're from. I promise I won't write and ask for money or anything and I won't sell your email address to some online marketer, it's just that I'm so happy to have friends from all over the world, that I want to know where in the world you are. Kind of like Carmen Sandiego, but in reverse, ya know?

So, please, leave a comment if you will, and you can do it anonymously. If you've got a blog, let me know. I'm always curious to read what life is like outside of the jungle. ;-)

  1. I live in Geneva, Switzerland! So that's where I'm writing from. I'm Ghanaian, though, was born and raised there and have all my family living there, so I love reading your blog and hearing your perspective. I don't update mine often enough, but oh well.

  3. I'm in Accra, Ghana - that's how I found your blog from the beginning. I'm not an active follower of your blog yet, but I plan to be once I'm down here on a more permanent basis.

I work as chief medical engineer in Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, so I divide my time between Sweden and Ghana as it is right now.

My blog you'll find at http://sanskrit.se/blog and even though the major part of it is in Swedish there's still parts you'll understand.

    Regards,
    Magnus

  5. I'm in Redondo Beach, CA. I started reading your blog because I wanted to learn about Ghana. I think there was link in trip advisor. Then I kept reading because it reminded me of the sights and sounds from my short visit to Ghana. Then, I kept reading because you write well and tell good stories.

  11. Hi Barb,
I'm from Pennsylvania, and I stumbled unto your blog by happy accident last year when I was googling freelance writing. I lived in Wa, Ghana for two years teaching with the Peace Corps, and am engaged to a Ghanaian from Tamale. Your stories remind me of so many things I love and miss, and some that I don't miss at all, and I really really have appreciated your sense of humor and point of view as a member of an American/Ghanaian family living in Ghana.

Feel free to visit my blog at www.hopsketchjump.blogspot.com !

  12. Hi Barbara, I'm in Duluth, Minnesota, but spent 4 days in Accra last week. I found your blog doing research on Ghana before my trip. We had an intersting time in Ghana. We also visited Kumasi, whre I met a Canadian, who is engaged to a Ghanaian. It seems there is more of that going around. You fiancees should get connected!

I'll have pictures of Ghana on my blog in a few days, hopefully.

Oh could you answer a question for me? I heard the word "Ghanaian" pronounced two different ways like "Ghan-AY-an"
and like "Ghani-an." Is there a preferred pronounciation?

  13. Hi!

I was born and raised in Canada and am currently residing in Toronto. Most of my immediate family lives in Ghana so I definitely have to make a trip back home sometime soon. I found your blog at work, I was probably Googling (the usual work activity) and lucky for me came across your humorous and informative blog.

    Keep up the good work!

  15. Re: Cecile

I think the pronunciation can go either way. I'm Ghanaian, and the only way I've heard people in Ghana pronounce the word is Ghani-an, like you said. However, when I'm outside Ghana, I pronounce it Ghan-AY-an to facilitate the spelling... a lot of people will leave out the extra "a" before the i if they can't hear it.

Perhaps those in Ghana who say Ghani-an are the ones getting it wrong though.. after all, you don't say "I'm Ghanaian" when in Ghana nearly as often as you do outside it!

  18. Hi! I've been in San Antonio, Texas for 4 months, but I moved from Sacramento, California where I grew up. There's a fair chance that I could be moving to Ghana in Accra or maybe Kumasi to be with my boyfriend who's probably moving there in the next few months. He wouldn't be ready to support me there for a year or two so I'm trying to see if I can find a job so I can be with him sooner. I don't know how this blogging works yet, but I think I've figured out how to start following yours!

  24. Hello Barb,

I am a former Boston Public Schools teacher on a leave of absence to travel and write, and I stumbled across your great blog while trying to research for the next leg of my Around the World journey. I am increasingly tempted to journey to Ghana, and wonder what your advice would be about such an endeavor. I can, of course, provide much more background info if that will help :) Find me at: http://lmarshallworld.blogspot.com/

    Cheers!

  30. Barb - nice to "meet" you, as it were. I accidentally came across your blog while I was looking for information about dealing with the US Embassy in Accra - that should be food for a blog all by itself. Anyway, I started reading and could not stop. I am a comparative newbie when it comes to Ghana. But it did not take long to work it's way into my heart. I have been there 3 times, working on a community project in the Volta and I have been blessed to meet some wonderful, special souls. I can honestly say I have never been treated better, anywhere, not even by family, and was made to feel at home very quickly. I fell in love with the country and her people. I have friends there now, including someone I love dearly. Reading your entries had me nodding my head, yup, that's how it is...

I am a nurse and through some informal connections I was able to get the unofficial "reality tour" (put this lab coat on, follow me and don't say anything) of Komfo Anokye & Korle Bu Hospitals. I give you credit for managing as you have, especially with the little one's DM. Nobody back home can fully appreciate what those conditions are like - it's too far out of their frame of reference. And as a nurse.... Anyway, I'm from New York and will be reading you from now on. Cheers!

  36. Hi there !

I'm from France and I was googling about light soup and just found your blog!
My boyfriend is an Asantini, we both live in France, together.

I went to Ghana the last two weeks for the first time of my life and really enjoyed it. My boyfriend is still staying there for two weeks and I was looking if I would be able to do some light soup for when he will be back home! haha

I know he hopes to go back to live in Ghana the day he will have enough money, and I have so much enjoyed time in Ghana that I can picture myself living there (in Kumasi). And I really love your blog, because you reprensent what I will be perhaps in several years (or a few - only God knows!)

    Thank you for your blog!
